g.i. joe – review

14 09 2009

g.i.joea movie based on some plastic action figures i had when i was a kid?  really?  cool!  i’ll watch it!  i’ll make this short and sweet…special f/x were awesome!  story was weak.  key cool points – the use of the phrase “go joes!” and use of the arctic trooper outfits!  ahhh, the memories 🙂  i can’t see there being a sequel even though they left it wide open for one or SIX!  the acting was flat but sienna miller looked great (one of the saving graces of the movie).

yes dear. you’re right.

Top Gunlast night i went out to top gun in crystal mall.  it’s a hotpot restaurant that is pretty decent.  for about $30 [with tip included] you can eat all the seafood, meat, and veggies you want to cook.  pretty sly for whomever invented the hotpot restaurant…we prep everything and drop it off at your table and YOU do all the cooking!  lol!  oh well, it was delicious.

went out basically for my gf’s friend’s birthday.  in the past she’s accused me said i don’t go out with her and her friends at all and i totally disagreed with her!  there were times…i can’t really remember all of them…ok, maybe i don’t go out as often as she goes out with me and my friends!  :p  i figured in the end she was right and i should join her on occasion.  you should know though that her usual times out are no boys allowed girls nights, so i obviously don’t go.  honestly i sometimes don’t find i have much to talk about with her girlfriends…maybe we lack similar interests or a common background.  who knows.  maybe it’s because i don’t go out enough with them to create a good relationship dialogue.  hmmmm.  food for thought.

anyways, last night was cool.  i didn’t know most of the people there but nonetheless there was good conversation and i had a great time.  mostly though i think it made liza happy that i came out and socialized…now they know she has a flesh and blood boyfriend and hasn’t been making me up to keep herself from looking lonely.  lol!

district 9 – review

14 09 2009

district 9 posterdistrict 9 is one of the summer’s most thoughtful and interesting movies.  it is directed by neill blomkamp who is actually a director based out of vancouver, bc…very cool 🙂  going into this movie i didn’t really know what to expect.  from the trailers that i’d seen i thought it was going to be a typical sci-fi thriller.  to my surprise and enjoyment though it was that and so much more!

the basic story is that aliens have landed in south africa and the government, over the last 20 years, has kept them under an apartheid-like rule sequestering them in a shanty town that has transformed into an alien slum (district 9).  the main character, wikus van der merwe (sharlto copley) is in charge of clearing the town and moving the aliens to a new area.  the fun begins when he is accidentally infected by an alien liquid while he was searching one of the shacks.  then his dna starts changing and it seems he is evolving into a hybrid of human/alien.  when the government takes him in they find out that he now can use the alien weaponry (it seems only aliens can somehow activate their guns, machinery, etc).  when he finds out they want to dissect him to find out how they can capitalize on his new dna, he is forced to go on the run hiding out in district 9.   he eventually befriends another alien who tells him he can reverse the dna process if they can get off the planet.

up to this point district 9 is more an intellectual movie; a comic/political statement on south african apartheid and a parallel to racism that society never seems to fail to inflict on what it doesn’t know or understand.  however as soon as wikus is out on the run, the action begins and then it’s alien laser cannons that completely obliterate anything that they hit, a transformer-like battle suit that is like wearing a walking tank, gunfire galore, explosions…everything a good action movie needs!

the movie is filmed for the most part as a mockumentary but then flits between an all out action movie and melodrama.  overall the effect is awesome and i loved the movie!  i’m giving this a 4.5 kick to the balls out of 5.  a little more consistency in action throughout the whole movie would have made it more a 5 for me.

whiteout – review

10 09 2009

whiteout movie posteri would be extremely surprised to find a good review of kate beckinsale’s newest movie “whiteout”!  she stars as carrie stetko, a us marshal stationed at a scientific base in antarctica.  it’s not that her acting in it wasn’t up to par…her and everyone else are quite solid.  it’s the story that took two hours out of my life that unfortunately i’ll never get back.

i think the breakdown comes from the initial  premise of the movie which i think is supposed to be greed, specifically greed for these diamonds (lost in a russian plane crash 60 years prior) that drives this conspiracy for murder.  that’s all well and good but i don’t buy it!  there are tons of diamonds and supposedly four guys who find them.  no one else knows about their finding and no one else (ie. russian government, etc) is looking for them either.  so really all they have to do is put them in their pockets and go home.  end of movie.  but no!  let’s use the winter storm in antarctica be the backdrop for murder and suspense…who murdered whom?

i should point out that thank god i didn’t actually waste my own money on this (i won tickets to a pre-screening).  ok, on with the review!

i really think the writers were trying to create some depth to beckinsale’s character by adding a continual flashback that explains (sort of but not really) why she ends up in the south pole and maybe why she’s paranoid.  i found that it didn’t further the plot at all.  and why wouldn’t she be paranoid when some freak killer is on the loose on an isolated antarctic base?  ugh!

anyway, in the end these diamonds just don’t seem enough justification for all the killing that happens in this movie.  and then to let the killer just walk out into the whiteout and kill himself??  really??  anti-climactic to say the least.  and finally, there’s so little to do with the actual whiteout that shares the movie’s title that it makes you wonder why they couldn’t at least come up with a better title!  to sum it all up –  i was bored!  throw in an abominable snowman or some vampires (a la other beckinsale movies) and maybe we’d have a film…but better to just “whiteout” this choice next time you’re deciding what to see 😉  i’m giving it a 2 kicks to the balls out of 5 (i would’ve given it 1 but beckinsale is hot and had one scene showing that beautiful body)!

‘stay’cation…you never know what you’ll find

we made it!

"stay"cation idea - hiking mount seymour

i wanted to get at least one more post in before the end of august.  it’s been a busy week because liza had some vacation and we decided we’d do the “staycation” thing instead of spending a lot of money travelling.  although she did try to convince me to go to hawaii about a half a dozen times as well as vegas and mexico.  she almost settled for portland but i convinced her the cost of even the smallest vacation would be more than i could afford to do right now.  she knows i’m starting to look at what’s out there job-wise so she reluctantly agreed to do things around town for the week.

so when it was all said and done we ended up having a pretty good time!  we hiked mount seymour with the dogs, saw a black bear, almost got lost, and sustained only a couple bug bites.  it was a gorgeous day for it too!  we saw district 9 which i’ll post a review of later (awesome movie!).  we tried out a few new restaurants including a little japanese ramen place on denman called ‘kintaro’ [the food was fast and tasty] and a organic breakfast place on commercial street [delicious as well].  we also went to the pne with a couple friends and checked out the marketplace [aka stuff you see on tv like shamwow] and also did the usual mini donuts and deep fried foods…ugh!  so bad…but so good!  then we did a little shopping around town and next thing you know she was back to work today 😦

it was a good time for sure!  you can never underestimate what you can do in your own backyard if you really look around 🙂

entourage rocks!

24 08 2009

entourageso i’ve recently gotten into entourage and i have to say i wish that i hadn’t waited so long to check it out!  i used to watch an episode here and there but i didn’t want to commit to another show as my list of “don’t miss shows on tv” was way too long!  but all of my friends were into it so i decided that i’d one day watch all the seasons and catch up.  well that day is finally here!  and again i must ask- WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG????

i’ve just finished seasons 1, 4, 5, and 6 (up to date at least) and i’m hooked.  actually i’ve been hooked since initially catching up on season 6 via shaw on demand 🙂  currently getting ahold of season 2 and 3 and i’m good!  what i love about this show is that it’s about guys!  guys doing guy things [you know what i mean].  it’s sex and the city for men but better!  the writers have really nailed the relationships between the characters and of course the actors are perfect.  it’s like watching a show about me and my guy friends.  we’d probably be exactly like this if we had the chance!  seriously, screwing chicks, smoking week, and partying…pretty much the definition of fun [not verbatim of course but you get the idea] 😉  i think we all know a vince, an eric, a turtle, a drama (seriously…what a great name!), and hopefully an ari (just to keep things interesting).  but to have them all inhabit one show weekly…awesome!

anyway, i recommend the series to anyone reading!  and if i ever get the chance to meet the writers and actors, all i want to do is shake their hands and say well done men!

another one bites the dust

24 08 2009

just got engagedthis past sunday one of my good friends went through on his word and got engaged!  it’s unbelievable, and not, at the same time.  he’s been going out with his gf for years now and now that she’s done school and he’s fairly established in his career, he decided that, in the words of bruce buffer, the official announcer for the ufc:

ok, he didn’t say it like that nor was that the sentiment.  all i know is that he went for it and is super happy he did 🙂

that being said, it now begs the question “when am i going to do it?”  thanks d-man!  [can you feel the oozing sarcasm!] lol!  i have a feeling that since you did it, that liza is going to expect it sooner from me.  not that i’m delaying it at all!  i’m not.  i just want to do things my way and have some fanfare to the whole ordeal 😉  i can’t lie to you and say i don’t feel the pressure now though.  i remember back when i was working in the call center and going out with this girl who also worked there.  every time i turned around either one of my friends or hers were getting married or having a baby!  crazy!  and she would lay on the pressure, concerned if we were going to get there too!  ugh.  needless to say i didn’t end up with her but that’s the last time i felt so much pressure to move along.  at least this time i believe i’m ready!  big difference!  lol!

i thought that i wouldn’t have to think about it until i got a new job but then i thought that this is definitely just procrastination talking.  i know that if i use that excuse that i’ll use the ‘i should wait until i’m settled in my new position’ excuse to even more prolong it.  i’m good!  i can actually manipulate any situation into an excuse if i want to.  a gift and a curse 😦

well, i guess i just wanted to write that i’m really happy for my buddy and his girlfriendnew fiance!

when i think about it, i’m actually looking forward to joining the ranks of the ENGAGED soon my friends…soon indeed.
